How Your AC System Works

It’s summer, so it’s time to start thinking about your AC system. If you want a great AC system you need a great technician for all your services, regular maintenance appointments, and a sound understanding of how your air conditioning system works.

We’ve noticed that homeowners in the Dallas area seem to really hit the nail on the head when it comes to these first two requirements, but fall flat when it comes to the last one. That’s where our educated team of technicians comes in. All our technicians understand the complex inner workings of an air conditioning system and can help you understand the basic framework too. We’re here when you need us! If you’re looking for great air conditioning services in Dallas, TX, schedule an appointment with our team today.

Your AC Basics

It’s important to understand the general framework of your air conditioning system. We’re going to walk you through the basics today using a very familiar framework as a reference point—the human body. The most important parts of your AC system include:

The Refrigerant:

This is a part of your HVAC system that’s commonly misunderstood. Your refrigerant is not what powers your air conditioning system. Your refrigerant is what transforms your hot air to cool air. You can think of the refrigerant as the “blood” of your air conditioning system. It pumps through the tubes in your air conditioners system and keeps the entire operation afloat.

The Compressor:

If the refrigerant is the blood of your HVAC system, the compressor is the heart. Your compressor is in charge of moving the refrigerant through all the loops and coils within your heating and cooling system. The compressor literally compresses your refrigerant into a hot, pressurized gas. After it’s condensed it moves into the outdoor unit and releases the absorbed heat.

The Thermostat:

Consider your thermostat to be the brain of your HVAC system. Sometimes homeowners underestimate the importance of their air conditioning system because it seems like it’s just a simple switch. In reality, your thermostat is one of the most important parts of your entire system. It sets the process of cooling in motion. If you don’t have a great thermostat in your home you’ll never get adequate cooling temperatures.

If you’re still working with an older thermostat, consider upgrading to a Wi-Fi thermostat or a smart thermostat this summer. These systems can help you get more cooling power for less money and give you monthly reports about your energy consumption.
