Ways Ductwork Can Become Damaged

Ductwork is made of a very thin sheet of metal. Because of its fragile nature, it can be damaged very easily and even shift around during normal HVAC operation. You wonder how exactly ductwork becomes damaged when it is placed out of the way in your attic.

You can keep reading to learn more about the ways that ductwork becomes damaged so that you can avoid airflow problems between your HVAC system and your home.

If you’re having a lot of problems with your ductwork and suspect that you need duct replacement in Mansfield, TX, you can give us a call to schedule your service appointment.

Moving Things Around

If your attic space doubles as storage, it’s possible that ductwork gets damaged as you are moving boxes or furniture around. You might think that bumping up against the ductwork isn’t a huge deal, but the material is so thin that even the slightest impact can lead to holes or broken seals along the seams.

You may do it without even knowing it. Ductwork is so fragile that it’s easy to brush against without realizing it. It’s best to completely stay away from the ductwork if you do have to be in the attic or are trying to store belongings.

Rodents

You probably don’t want to think about small animals getting up into your attic, but it’s definitely a possibility. Rodents may be looking for a place to hide and dig into your ductwork out of curiosity. This is an especially common time of year to find rodent damage since small animals often seek shelter during the colder months.

If rodents damage your ductwork, you may have hole sections that need to be replaced since their impact can be significant. There may be holes or ductwork may be pushed around so that it no longer has an effective layout for optimal airflow.

Time and Age

Sometimes damage isn’t to the individual pieces of ductwork itself. Instead, damage happens to the seals that connect the pieces together. The seals are usually made of some type of tape or glue. As the years go by, the seals can loosen up and allow both conditioned air to escape and dust and dirt to get into your ductwork. As dust gets into the seals, it can worsen the problem until the pieces of your ductwork are no longer securely attached together and airtight.
